Ssshhh… It’s Our Secret Recipe

When enjoying any of our delicious sandwiches, one of our most popular sides is our Housemade Slaw! We didn't just want to keep this delightful take on classic coleslaw to ourselves, so we decide to give the recipe to you!

Our slaw includes shredded broccoli and carrots, cranberries, mayo, salt, pepper, and apple cider vinegar, making it sweeter leaning and the perfect addition to any summer BBQ (or in recent weather…a Winter BBQ)!

This is our variation of the classic coleslaw we all know and love. Coleslaw, which is a staple side dish in many cultures, has been around for centuries. The word "coleslaw" is derived from the Dutch term "koolsla," which means "cabbage salad." It's believed that coleslaw originated in the Netherlands, but it was the Americans who popularized it in the early 18th century. Coleslaw was first introduced in the United States by Dutch immigrants who settled in New York. Over time, the recipe evolved to include other vegetables, such as carrots and broccoli (see we aren’t crazy for adding them!), and different dressings were added to the mix, creating a variety of coleslaw options.

While it's now easy to purchase coleslaw in pre-made packages at the grocery store, there's something special about making it by hand. Making coleslaw by hand gives it an intentional touch, and allows you to customize the flavors to your liking. You can choose to add more or less dressing, depending on how tangy or creamy you like it, and can experiment with different types of vegetables and fruits to create your own unique coleslaw recipe. Making coleslaw by hand also ensures that you know exactly what ingredients are going into it, and allows you to use fresh, seasonal produce for the best flavor. So, the next time you're craving coleslaw, consider taking the extra time to make it by hand – it's a rewarding and delicious experience!

Here is our delicious recipe for you to enjoy at home!

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise (to taste)

  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar

  • 1/4 tsp black pepper (to taste)

  • Apple (optional, but we like to add it in the fall/winter! Pear is great as well!)

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the shredded broccoli, shredded carrots, and dried cranberries.

  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar, salt, and black pepper.

  3. Pour the dressing over the broccoli mixture and toss until everything is evenly coated.

This sweet and tangy coleslaw is the perfect side dish for any occasion. The shredded broccoli and carrots add a fresh crunch to the dish, while the dried cranberries provide a sweet burst of flavor.
